Get Paid as a Family Caregiver in Nebraska

Some Nebraska families may be able to use LRI Personal Care when a legally responsible family member is already providing extraordinary care. The rules are specific, and the care must be authorized through the appropriate program or waiver.

    What LRI means

LRI stands for Legally Responsible Individual. In practical terms, it usually refers to a spouse or parent who already has a legal responsibility for the person receiving care. Nebraska's LRI Personal Care pathway may allow that caregiver to be paid for approved personal care services when requirements are met.

    What care may qualify

Approved LRI care focuses on hands-on needs that go beyond what a spouse or parent would ordinarily provide for a same-age person without a disability or chronic illness. Current Nebraska materials describe an Extraordinary Care assessment, generally requiring qualifying needs in at least three areas; only needs scored as qualifying and included in the authorized plan may be paid. Examples can include bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers, positioning, feeding, food-texture preparation, and certain waiver- and relationship-specific health tasks.

How Golden Years Health supports families

We help families understand the LRI process, gather documentation, complete agency onboarding, meet training and background-check requirements, and document approved care after authorization.

    What to do next

    1. 1Ask the service coordinator whether the participant’s current waiver offers LRI Personal Care.
    2. 2Have the service coordinator complete the Extraordinary Care assessment and identify qualifying needs.
    3. 3Complete provider onboarding and wait for written service authorization before billing or paid care begins.

    Frequently asked questions

    Are hours guaranteed?

No. Hours must be authorized based on the person's assessed needs and service plan. Golden Years Health can explain how documentation and care planning work.

Can Golden Years Health help if we are just starting?
